Of the sexual violence crimes not reported to police from 2005-2010, the victim gave the following reasons for not reporting:
- 20% feared retaliation
- 13% believed the police would not do anything to help
- 13% believed it was a personal matter
- 8% reported to a different official
- 8% believed it was not important enough to report
- 7% did not want to get the perpetrator in trouble
- 2% believed the police could not do anything to help
- 30% gave another reason, or did not cite one reason

- Feeling young and powerless
- Shame
- Self-blame
- Desire to move on
- Belief that reporting wouldn’t do any good
- Not wanting to turn a family member in
- Effect on future relationships
- Afraid of further damage from attacker
- Afraid of the legal process
- Knew the person and didn’t want to destroy their life
This Ipsos Reid poll was conducted between Jan. 17 and Jan. 23, 2015. A sample of 2,150 Canadian women aged 18+ (including a sample of 645 who said they’d had an unwanted sexual encounter) was interviewed via the Ipsos I-Say online panel. The poll is accurate to within +/ – 2.4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Canadian women ages 18+ been surveyed, and within +/- 4.4 percentage points had all women who had been involved in an unwanted sexual encounter been surveyed.
